The 36th GITEX Technology Week opened it’s doors on Sunday the 16th. GITEX is the largest tech event in MEA & South Asia, with over 4,000 global tech leaders, 400+ startups, 200+ global investors & visitors recorded this year from 64 countries.

This year is all about Re-Imagining Realities, new sectors were added to the conference this year to include Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Smart Living & Wearables, Digital Marketing, Drones, Robotics, iCities, 3D Printing and Startup showcasing, so we geared up and went to discover this innovation gala.

One of the largest halls was dedicated to Smart Government Solutions, once you enter the hall you feel like there is an app-rally going on, 22 local government entities are participating with their innovations targeting a safer, healthier and happier Dubai.

An interesting solution was EMILY (Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard) which is a remotely controlled robot that helps lifeguards in rescuing people much faster & without putting their lives at risk in critical situations.

It seems like Dubai Police has a huge co-operation with Huawei, they’re sponsoring security innovations that utilizes Facial Recognition, Geo Locations, AR & VR, Robotics & AI to create a smart security & surveillance systems. The solutions are not only for people and vehicles, but using AR & geo locations, they can get a complete report on houses and utilities to check for violations.

This year RTA (Roads & Transport Authority) took their services to the next level. They introduced their first self-driving cars, & the Smart Rental, where you can book a car easily on demand with hourly basis. The also introduced further stages of their Smart Parking mobile solution that enables drivers to easily find free parking slots in crowded streets like Sheikh Zayed’s road. smart street lighting & bus shelter solutions were presented as well as part of their vision creating a smarter Dubai.

Other entities like Dubai Health Authority(DHA) , Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA), Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA),  Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), DP World, introduced solutions varying from to healthy & sustainable living, solar energy solutions, network outage prevention, smart infrastructure maintenance, to using robots as information stations & even as baristas.

Etisalat had the most impressive wing in GITEX this year, their displays looked like a place from outer space. They introduced Omar the robot, showing off its cognitive abilities and what seemed to be spontaneous smart reactions. The robot engaged with the audience uniquely and was even able to break the ice and cutting awkward silence by saying things like “you have a beautiful smile” and “those are nice glasses” and it would shake your hands after a good conversation.Etisalat also introduced solutions for people with disabilities, some of them are just inventions brought from abroad and others are projects they fund.

Smart Learning and gamified educational solutions by integrating mobile apps, lego, robotics & augmented reality had a good focus this year in GITEX whether by public or private sectors. It seems that Dubai is determined to utilize the latest inventions world wide to reach their vision to become the Smartest and Happiest city in the world.
