Reinventing the traditional key
The three most important items we usually carry around with us are our keys, mobile phone and wallet. Physical keys and passcards are so common that we hardly give them a second thought. But it’s a big problem if you lose them, and worse they are copied or stolen. ASSA ABLOY, one of the world’s most famous suppliers of security solutions, saw the opportunity to reinvent the key. The vision of a mobile key replacing a physical key started to take form, and ASSA ABLOY turned to us for partnership from strategy to development.
Screen Interaction as our partner has a unique mix of designers and developers.
General Manager, ASSA ABLOY Seos
The project was started by looking at and discussing business goals together with ASSA ABLOY. We found that the solution would need to handle the challenges of traditional keys as well as be more secure and easy to use for both the clients of ASSA ABLOY and end users. To develop the initial idea, we went out to meet users. After interviews, the first concept started to take form. The mobile solution was developed iteratively in several steps, with a series of pilots and tests in the user’s environment. Each test meant adapting the user interface based on the learning. This meant that the product, when eventually launched, immediately created a positive user experience.
With the help of NFC technology, wireless communication at close range and the mobile phone, ASSA ABLOY together with Screen Interaction could now offer the market a whole new product – a mobile key. A mobile electronic lock system that is considerably more flexible than a traditional system. It can issue and deliver digital keys to mobile phones and, if necessary, quickly block users.
Today, ASSA ABLOY Seos is a system of products and services for managing mobile keys. The system is also used to send public transport tickets to the mobile phone. End users are thrilled with the solution and the company, and the industry and has gained lots of attention worldwide. It was nominated for Guldmobilen 2011 in the category of Innovative Technology of the Year, Cut The Wire Awards 2011 in the category of Best Innovation Service and IxDA Interaction Awards 2012 in the category of Disrupting. The solution was the winner of HOT Awards 2011 in the category of Self-Service Products.
ASSA ABLOY is an international corporation with around 43,000 employees represented in over 70 countries with a turnover of SEK 47 million. They offer a more comprehensive range of products for lock and door solutions than any other company on the market.
